 This fun quilt combines different sized rectangles with pieced blocks to give the illusion of stairs. 

 Batiks and small uniform prints work well.  Directional prints or fabrics with large color variations do not work as well as they interfere with the blending of the rectangles and pieced blocks. 

I chose a group of batiks in blues and oranges.  The quilt binding can be created using left-over fabric after piecing the top as I did or another fabric can be chosen if desired. 

Lap size: 60" x 72".

This quilt features two high-contrast fabrics and an optional accent color.  The ruler included with the book makes it easy to create the pinwheel-like blocks from strips.  Adding an extra strip before cutting creates an additional design where the corners of the blocks join, giving the quilt a whole new look.  The scraps can be used to create a bonus project.

The book contains instructions for two and three color variations as well as three and four strip versions.  I used the three color - four strip version in dark and light gray with burgundy accent.  I rearranged the four block table runner to create a  4x4, 40” x 40” wall hanging and used some of the scraps to sew a mini star table runner
